What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the entire portion of a tooth that is visible above the gumline. The main purpose of crowns is to restore the shape, function, and appearance of damaged teeth.  They can be made of various materials, but here in our practice, we favor zirconia and EMAX, both of which are very durable and bear a strong resemblance to natural tooth enamel.

Crowns can be used in various situations. For example, they might be used for:

  • Decayed teeth
  • Teeth that have been treated with root canal therapy
  • Misshapen or severely discolored teeth
  • Teeth that have become worn down due to long-term bruxism

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The dental crown process usually requires at least two appointments. During the initial visit, we will prepare your tooth. We may have to reshape it by removing some of its enamel so it will fit well beneath its restoration. We will numb you during this process so you are as comfortable as possible.

Then, we will take impressions of your mouth and use those as the basis for designing your crown. You will wear a temporary restoration while a trustworthy laboratory fabricates your permanent crown. Once it is ready, you will return to our office so we can verify that it meets our strict quality standards before we attach it to your tooth.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

A dental crown can provide several noteworthy benefits:

  • A crown can protect a damaged tooth and restore its function. You may experience less pain and discomfort as a result.
  • A crown may prevent the need for an extraction. Keeping your natural smile intact can provide oral health benefits and help you save money.
  • Crowns look beautiful. Zirconia and EMAX crowns are almost indistinguishable from natural tooth enamel.
  • A well-made crown supports a healthy bite. This can help your upper and lower teeth to work harmoniously together.
  • Crowns last a long time. With proper maintenance, your crown may last for 15 – 20 years or longer.
