We have consistently strived to create a more positive approach to dental care. Adding televisions, blankets, and other comfort amenities can be helpful to some; however, others still struggle with the idea of sitting in a dentist’s chair. Dr. Kiesel understands that prolonged visits, multiple procedures, and even the sights and sounds can be a deterrent for many, which is why sedation dentistry is a game-changer for patients. Offering four types in our Coppell office, we encourage you to call us to see why your next dental visit may be the one that completely changes how you think about dentistry.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry allows us to provide a variety of dental treatments safely and comfortably for patients who experience anxiety. There are several benefits to sedation dentistry, including:

  • Little to no memory of undergoing the procedure
  • No sense of time while under sedation
  • No sense of smell or sound
  • No fear or anxiety during treatment
  • No physical discomfort

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is considered a mild to moderate solution that helps patients struggling with dental anxiety or who are preparing to undergo multiple treatments in a single appointment. It comes in the form of a pill that is to be taken before your visit so that you feel more comfortable by the time you reach the dentist’s chair.

IV Sedation

IV sedation involves an injection placed within the arm or hand that delivers medication directly into the bloodstream. This method is typically only recommended when extreme cases of dental anxiety occur. Its fast-acting effects allow you to feel more at ease much quicker than other solutions, but it does take time for it to wear off – which is why you must have someone drive you home after your appointment.

General Anesthesia (“Sleep Dentistry”)

When complex procedures (one or multiple) are necessary, general anesthesia may be recommended. Also known as sleep dentistry, this is far different than other forms of sedation because it actually puts you to sleep. Instead of having some level of consciousness, you will be completely asleep and unlikely to remember anything from your appointment. Our team will closely monitor you to ensure that you remain safe and comfortable throughout treatment.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide is the mildest form of sedation and poses no real risk of side effects once treatment is over. As a gas that is inhaled through a nasal mask, the calmness and relaxation that you feel will allow you to remain cognizant enough to respond to cues but also comfortable so that you are unafraid while receiving necessary dental care. Once the mask is removed, you can expect the effects to wear off quickly so that you can resume your day.
